About CVM Sheep

Purebred C V M Sheep

California Variegated Mutant (CVM) sheep are a subgroup of Romeldale sheep.  Romeldales were originally developed by A.T. Spencer beginning in 1915 after he purchased a number of Romney rams at the Pan-American exposition in San Francisco and used them on his cross bred Rambouillet/Corriedale ewes.  After many years of careful breeding and rigorous selection the Romeldale was developed.  In the 1960’s Glen Eidman and J.K. Spencer found in their flock of white Romeldales the occasional badger faced ewe lamb or badger faced ram lamb.  The resulting offspring were of the same color pattern.  Over the years other mutant Romeldale lambs were kept and through subsequent breedings and selections the CVM breed was born.  The breed book has been closed for many years and only sheep that can be traced back to the original flock can be registered with ARCR.   CVM sheep are a fiber artist’s dream come true; wonderfully soft fibers with next to the skin softness that come in nature’s bounty of colors.  They will never bore you with their colors and patterns…shearing is always a thrilling experience.  CVM’s are easy to handle, great mothers, and hardy to most environments...a wonderful asset to any farm.  With purebred registrations totaling less than approximately 500 individuals we welcome concerned stewards to help preserve this wonderful national treasure.  If you would like to get to know these animals better and have a hand in their future, log on to NationalCVMconservancy.com or give us a call at 574-299-1225.
